I checked out your web site again. I have three names that I don't see in the 1970 and 71 rosters. There was a L/Cpl Tom Kenner when I got there in July of 1970. He was from Toledo Ohio. I was from Cincinnati and Bill Hertenliner was from Circleville Oh. I went to see both of them when I got out in June of 72. Bill had moved to Fla. He got a hardship discharge in 71 when his father died. He was on the west coast just north of the Sanibel Island area. As far as I know Tom is still in Toledo. We were all in the same room at one time in 71. I think that Bill was a L/Cpl also. I volunteered to go to Subic Bay in June of 70 just to get out of Camp Lejeune. The moral was poor at the time. We had a lot of Vietnam Vets that had came back and just wanted out. They sent me back to Camp Lejeune in Oct of 71 and the moral was even worse. The only good time that I had was on a Carib Cruise in March of 72. I went to Vieagas with the 10th Marines. I also remember Bill Hess who got killed on his motor cycle in the vicinity of Subic City (which was off limits). I think that he was a PFC. There was always a rumor that was going around at the time about Sgt Snow. He supposedly deserted at Subic Bay before I got there. He was rumored to be in the Black Market in the Subic Bay area. I don't know if they ever caught him. He also supposedly would sneak back on base from time to time. There were some of us that got together to go to Bagio. It was in the mountains and we took the bus up through the narrow mountain roads. That driver must have driven that road every day. I don't know how he stayed on that road at the speeds that he was attaining. There was a big difference in temperature. I didn't see any snow but it felt like it was in the 40's. It was pretty country. I remember that after I had been there for 6 months that if the temperature got below 65 degrees that we had our coats on. I got to Manilla once and didn't think much of it. It looked more poverty stricken than Olongapo. I could see the Spanish influence on the architecture. I also turned 20 and 21 in Subic Bay. There was a Typhoon that passed over the base in Oct of 71. I was on at the Main Gate by myself. The order came out to close the Main Gate and stay inside the concrete block hut. The eye of the Hurricane went right over the base. The sky cleared up and the wind was calm for about 7 minutes. The worst part thankfully was the leading edge of the storm. I heard it did some major damage to Manilla. I did some time on Mt Santa Rita also. When I left Cubi, it was just as busy. When the 1st Marine Div asked to come to Cubi, we had no space except jungle, so they built a tent camp at what became Upper MAU. The AM Radio/TV repeater station ( 7 different channels on repeaters all over base and in the hills) was located next to the American Express Bank on one side and the Retired expatriate store on the South side, in the same complex of buildings near the main gate with the gym, bowling alley, Chiefs Club, enlisted clubs, and the ball fields. The station had 3 sailors, one Air Force Tech Sgt. (Former Marine), three Filipinos and me on staff. We operated Monday through Saturday from 6 AM to 6 PM, at night and Sunday signal was from Clark. We also maintained the repeaters and service from the closed station at San Miguel. Our signal from Clark was relayed via Mt. Santa Rita. I hosted the morning shift from 6 AM to noon and then shot news film for evening news. Afternoons, nights and weekends shot 16 mm movie film, processed, edited, wrote copy, voiced over and recorded and got it on the bus to Clark no later than 4 PM for 6 PM and or 10 PM news. Barracks Maintenance NCO, and spent every single night after that on Libo out in the Po for the next year. Didn't drink at all, only chased T.Y. in the PI. Spent my nights working the girls, and my days sleeping on some other Jarhead's rack (boots on the deck, of course) "escorting" the Filipino contract maintenance workers in the various rooms that needed maintenance work.
